The unique type of kumquat is Fortunella japonica, or Japanese kumquat. It is the only species whose kumquat fruits are round.

Compared to margaritas, japonica is more resistant to cold and can be grown in the soil in our climate. However, the most resistant species of kumquats in the cold is Fortunella obovata. It is also characterized by the largest fruit size and the characteristic concavity of the apex. Larger and wider are also tree leaves, suitable for home-grown, other species are Fortunella polyandra, Fortunella crassifolia and Fortunella hindsi.
