  1. Asian basil – Indian adaptogens

Tulasi, or Asian basil, is a herb that is considered one of the most important plants by traditional Indian medicine. Due to its characteristic smell, it is often used in the form of incense, powder or oil. The benefits of using this plant come from its oily extract. The fat obtained from tulasi leaves is primarily regarded as an anti-stress preparation and stabilizing the mental state (it is referred to as an adaptogen).

It is also assumed that this preparation may be helpful in the treatment of colds, strep throat or flu and the accompanying symptoms (eg hoarseness, dry cough). What’s more, the therapeutic properties of Asian basil also include an increase in testosterone levels, slowing down the aging process, stimulating blood circulation and protecting the liver.

The dosage of the supplement is determined by body weight. It is assumed that the administration of 500 mg of the extract twice a day is mainly used for neurological and adaptogenic purposes. Regarding body weight, supplementation looks the following way (doses are theoretical and based on animal studies)

– 1100-2200 mg with a weight of 70 kg for general improvement and 5,500 mg for an increase in testosterone;

– 1500-2900 mg at 90 kg body weight for overall improvement and 7300 mg to increase the amount of testosterone;

– 1800-3600 mg for 110 kg body weight with an overall improvement and 9100 mg for an increase in testosterone levels.

Adverse reactions that may result from permanent supplementation are rare, but include diarrhea, upset stomach and vomiting. Contraindications to receiving tulasi are liver failure and hypothyroidism.

Boswellia serrata is a herb that belongs to phytopharmaceuticals. It can be found in India, Nigeria and eastern Africa. Due to the olibanum contained therein – a grained preparation with a yellow-brown color – it is used to make incense.

Fenugreek, usually referred to as fenegryk¹, Greek hay or iosoznik, is a popular herb in the Arab and Indian territories, and its cultivation covers almost the whole world. For many centuries it has been used as an aphrodisiac and essential oil, as well as addition to dishes.

Fenegry is used primarily as a preparation to increase libido by improving blood circulation to the genital organs. It also increases breast milk production and testosterone levels. Due to the presence of trigonellins in its composition, it is assumed that it regulates the level of sugar in the blood.

It is also successfully used in stimulating the appetite, preventing cramps, lowering cholesterol and healing wounds and purifying the blood. Fenugreek supplementation depends on the goal we want to achieve. A dose of 500 to 600 mg helps improve libido and increase testosterone levels. On the other hand, a portion of between 2 and 5 g of seeds will maintain the proper level of sugar in the blood.

Sickle cotyledon is a herb used in Tibetan medicine, where it is often referred to as an anti-inflammatory drug. Occurs in north-eastern and south-west China, where it develops mainly in the Himalayas and the Tibetan Uplands.

At the outset, it should be added that there is no empirical evidence for the beneficial activity of the ostroodon on the human body. It is assumed that it has analgesic and antioxidant properties due to the phenylethylamine contained in the composition. Tibetan culture uses this preparation to lower cholesterol levels, improve the work of the nervous system and heart and treatment of influenza, bleeding and inflammation. The preparation is mainly used in the form of a powder that can be used for compresses to speed up wound healing.

She Huang Zi or Cnidium Monneri is a Chinese herb that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years. What’s more, in the composition of this plant we can find such compounds as phenylpherena, coumarin, sesquiterpenes or sitosterols.

Cnidium Monnieri is used, among others in sports, due to the help of the body in the production of nitric oxide – a compound responsible not only for the improvement of sexual function, relaxation of the smooth muscle, but above all for causing the effect of the muscle pump. Pro-health properties of the plant are used to treat the symptoms of asthma and cold, acne, stimulation of digestive processes and eliminating indigestion and bloat

Dosing takes place while eating a meal, and a portion of the preparation is 0.5 g per day. Cnidium Monnieri rarely causes side effects, and if they do occur, they appear in the form of nausea and vomiting. The preparation is contraindicated for use by nursing women and during pregnancy.

How to use nettle in the kitchen?

In the kitchen, most often we do not use the full potential of nettles. Usually we prepare only herbal infusions or teas. In fact, nettle can become a real delicacy and the main character of many interesting and healthy dishes, if only we “open” to new flavors and combinations of various food products. Nettle soup

Full of valuable vitamins and minerals. Strengthen the body and give energy. Ideally suited for a spring dinner or a warm, light dinner.


– 3 liters of shoots and young leaves of nettle

– 1 can of coconut milk

– 3 liters of vegetable or vegetable-meat broth

– 2 onions

– 2 cloves of garlic

– rapeseed oil

– salt, black pepper

– toasts to be served


  1. Rinse the stinging nettles on the sieve. Peel onions, quickly chop and fry with chopped garlic cloves on 3-4 tablespoons of oil, salt at the end.
  2. Put the onion into a pot and add the broth. Bring to a boil. Stir the nettles on the boiling liquid. Cook about 15-20 minutes.
  3. Shred soup with a hand blender. Season with salt and pepper. Add coconut milk.
  4. Mix and cook for 5-10 minutes on low heat. Serve with croutons.


Pesto from nettles

Nowadays, the level of interest in herbal medicine and natural medicine is gradually increasing. Plants with medicinal properties are treated as alternatives to medicines or as adjuvants for therapy. It is also common to use herbs in cosmetics and body care. One of such prized plants is nettle.


Application throughout history

For centuries, the popularity of nettles has been falling in the increasing – sometimes appreciated for versatile action, sometimes forgotten and treated as a component of dishes for poor people. In fact, this plant was already popular in antiquity, he wrote about it, among others Hippocrates or Pliny the Old. At that time, it was recommended for the treatment of hemorrhages, burns, poisoning or rheumatism. In folk medicine, it was recommended to whip nettles in order to prevent rheumatism, and its decay was used in skin problems, asthma, cough or dandruff

Nettle composition

Herbal raw materials are leaves (folium), herb (herba), root (radix) and seeds (semen), which differ slightly in composition and effect. Nettle leaves, especially fresh ones, contain the most biologically active compounds, including beta-carotene, tannins, flavonoids, tannins, vitamin C, calcium, iron, potassium, phosphorus, selenium, silicon, manganese, vit. K, wit. B2, pantothenic acid and also some volatile organic acids. The roots include polysaccharides, sterols, lectins, organic acids, lecithin, waxes and mucilages, ligates, tannins, ceramides and mineral salts. Nettle herb also provides certain amounts of vitamins, minerals, organic acids and fatty acids. Plant seeds can be a good source of vitamins and minerals, but not as abundant as leaves. Considering the rich composition of this plant,inclusion of nettles in the daily diet of the whole family, can be a natural and cheap supplement to many valuable ingredients.


Properties and application

Nettle is used in really many ailments! It stimulates the immune system, reduces cholesterol, lowers blood pressure, reduces inflammation and soothes pain. It has been proven to be a diuretic, so it is recommended for kidney stones, inflammation of the kidneys, edema, but also diseases of the musculoskeletal system – increases the amount of uric acid excreted, which can, for example, accumulate in the tissues of the body. Nettle can be used as an alternative in the course of type II diabetes (reduces blood glucose), also works antihememorphic, increases the level of hemoglobin and has a positive effect on the number of erythrocytes (red blood cells). Recommended for stomach problems, spring weakness or reduced symptoms of rhinitis. It is worth remembering that the nettle is not only used as a medicinal plant,but also as a natural dye (E140) – a rennet substitute in the production of cheeses or a source of natural fibers.


How to use?

There are many different preparations on the market, containing nettle in the composition of tea, tablets, juices, oils, honey and ready-made herbal mixtures. Each of them has a dosage method given by the manufacturer that should be followed or consult a physician. If, on the other hand, we prepare home decoction of nettle leaves, we should pour about 2 spoons of boiling water into boiling water and boil for 5 minutes on a small gas. Then leave it for 10 minutes and strain. Such homemade herbal tea is recommended to drink 2-3 times a day after about ½ cup (or more) after eating. Nettle should not be used in the presence of haemorrhage caused by, for example, polyps or some cancers.

Chili pepper can reduce the risk of death?

Spices and herbs, due to their diversity, have been used for centuries to prepare meals to give them a unique flavor, aroma or color. They gained fame, not only because of their technological properties, but also because of their healing effects on the body. Even Hippocrates and Galen believed that the use of spices and herbs could restore the body’s balance.

Many researchers have proven the benefits of spices and bioactive compounds found in them. In the previous works on the properties of spicy spices, in particular chilli pepper, its effect has been presented – the increase of lipid catabolism in various organs and tissues, reduced risk of obesity or hypercholesterolemia, and consequently a possible effect on the reduction of hypertension, type II diabetes, atherosclerosis, as well as metabolic syndrome. Antimicrobial activity of selected spices and herbs was also checked based on the ability to modify the intestinal microflora.

A prospective cohort study that took place in China, presented a reverse relationship between the consumption of spicy spices, including chili peppers and mortality due to cancers, cardiovascular diseases and respiratory diseases.

Mustafa Chopan and Benjamin Litenberg in their work published this year in “PLOSone. TENTH ANNIVERSARY “, based on population data of Americans from NHANES III (Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey), presented a different view on the valuable properties of chilli pepper. The study group had nearly 16 thousand. adult participants.

They proved that the consumption of hot chili pepper was associated with a reduction in the risk of death by about 13% – in particular because of heart disease and stroke.

The mechanism by which chili pepper can reduce the risk of death is not fully understood. It is believed that Transient Receptor Potential (TRP) is one of the primary receptors for compounds derived from acute substances such as capsaicin. Type 1 TRP activation is likely to stimulate cellular mechanisms associated with obesity, by altering the mediators of lipid catabolism and thermogenesis. As it is known, the prevention of obesity leads to a reduction in the risk of atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease, motor system, etc. Capsicin can additionally protect against cardiovascular diseases by modulating the TRP receptor mediating the coronary flow.

In addition to the unique properties of capsaicin in chili peppers, it also contains many other valuable nutrients, in particular B vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin A. provitamin.

Warning! However, it should be remembered that compounds contained in sharp spices may irritate the mucous membrane of the stomach, which may affect the exacerbation of gastric ulcer symptoms. In the above case, you should use an easily digestible diet with limitation or even exclusion of such spices.
